BC 94 : C Louis Leipoldt Papers    Finding Aid    Correspondence
C LOUIS LEIPOLDT was a medical inspector of schools in London in 1912. He returned to South Africa in 1914 to take up an appointment as Medical Inspector of Schools in the Transvaal, the first such post in South Africa. Except for a break in service when he was drafted into the Army, CLL held this post until the end of 1922. During this time he travelled throughout the Transvaal and set up clinics in some of the larger centres. He also advised the Provincial Councils of Natal and the Cape on the organisation at School Medical Inspectorates in those Provinces. This collection contains 66 items concerned with medical inspection in schools.

Dr Bleek (1827-75) was a pioneer in the study of African linguistics and ethnology, and this collection contains some sections which deal with the traditional medicine of the Bushmen.

BC 704 : Thelma Tyfield (1906-1968)    Finding Aid
English teacher at the Good Hope Seminary, Cape Town from 1937, and principal there 1943-1961. She wrote English - The Living Language, and compiled two anthologies, The Living Tradition (with K R Nicol) and True-Filed Line. The collection of poems, Time Prized was published posthumously in 1972. MSS of 92 poems, including those in Time Prized. Teaching notes on Shakespeare's plays and other literature.
