As part of the first phase of an exciting project to integrate formerly dispersed Special Collections, the public services of the Manuscripts & Archives Department (which was formerly housed in the Harry Oppenheimer Institute), have now moved into the Jagger Library building, where they will share a common, secure space with the African Studies and Rare Books collections. This impressive reading room is located on Level 3 of the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library and is in the process of being restored to its original historic condition.

Whenever possible, researchers are asked to provide us with advance notice of an intended visit, and advance booking of materials. Some of our holdings are kept off-site, and advance notification will allow us to have material readily available upon arrival.
This chronological exhibition is built around three themes – The Early Days; Apartheid; Madiba And Beyond – and represents just a tiny selection of the prolific output and variety of South African political cartoonists. All the images can be found in books, newspapers and journals located in African Studies Library.
