Joseph Opatoshu (1886-1954) was a Yiddish novelist and short story writer. Born in Poland, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1907. He wrote on many subjects, but is particularly well known for his portrayal of the Jewish underworld in eastern Europe, from his novel A Roman fun a ferd ganef - The Story of a Horse-thief. His son David appeared in Yiddish theatre and later on Broadway and in Hollywood movies. |
